Title
Northwest European Shelf seas - Molecular fingerprints for marine bacteria and archaea
Notes
Data on molecular composition of bacterial/archaea communities. The advent of next generation DNA sequencing technology is allowing us to study the biotic environment and the genetics of whole organisms in unparalleled detail. The capacity of these methods to generate whole genome sequences in a few days has revolutionised the science of genomics. Metagenomics, the study of all organisms in a particular environment by ultra high-throughput sequencing of DNA derived from the environment, is allowing us to examine the biotic effects of environmental change and the function of previously-uncharacterised microbial communities. The project used pyrosequencing, a rapidly-developing NGS method, to generate DNA sequence comprising genomes of organisms and metagenomes from environments of particular significance to research programmes at the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera), Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA) and Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas). A key component of the project was to develop and share analytical pipelines to allow exploitation of this data.
