Bluefin tuna has been overfished for decades and if not protected accordingly, could disappear from EU waters. For this reason, tough measures to secure the future of the blue fin tuna stock have been taken immediately by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) ICCAT. They have taken the format of a special recovery plan adopted in 2006 with the objective to bring back this stock within safe biological limits. the European Union, as a contractor party of the ICCAT has transposed all the legislation into Community law with a view to fulfil its international obligations in this fishery. To ensure the full implementation of the recovery plan, the Commission has established a Specific Control and Inspection Programme to monitor its implementation and enforcement. |
