Defra Pollutant Base Maps - NO2

These concentrations maps are provided to assist local authorities in support of the Review and Assessment of local air quality. The total concentration of a pollutant comprises those from explicit local emission sources such as, roads, chimney-stacks, etc., and those that are transported into an area by the wind from further away. If all the local sources were removed, all that would remain is that which comes in from further away; it is this component that is called ‘background’.

Mapped background NO2 concentrations for use in LAQM Review and Assessments undertaken by Scottish local authorities are available on the [Scottish Air Quality website](http://www.scottishairquality.co.uk/data/mapping?view=data). Background maps are updated by Defra periodically due to updates to underlying data including emissions factors. In recent years there have been annual updates due to new information on NOx emissions from diesel vehicles. Fleet and vehicle activity data have also been updated. Local authorities should use the most up-to-date data available. For example: it is now widely recognised that high NO2 concentrations during 2010 meant that the resulting projected background concentrations for NO2 within these maps may be higher than is to be expected in a typical year. Updated maps with a 2011 base will be released in due course.

Data provided is an extract of data filtered for Glasgow City local authority area. The data is divided geographically into 1km x 1km squares. Eastings and Northings are provided for each square. Full dataset available from [here](http://laqm.defra.gov.uk/maps/maps2010.html).
