Notes | The Yorkshire Dales National Park Landscape Character Assessment was carried out by consultants with input from National Park staff, and was completed in 2001. It was undertaken in order to provide the National Park Authority with an objective and independent assessment of landscape character in the Park. The Assessment identifies 40 distinct landscape units, reflecting individual dales and upland watersheds. Each of these distinct areas is classified and described, having regard to overall landscape character and to the key characteristics that build that character. At a broader level there are summary descriptions of the landscape character of the Yorkshire Dales as a whole and of the main physical, historic and cultural influences that have shaped the Dales and given it its particular identity.
The Landscape Character Assessment was endorsed by the Authority in March 2002, and has been used subsequently to inform a range of policies and projects within the National Park. The GIS layer was created to show the boundary of each of the 40 landscape units. |
