The main objective of the Price Statistics is to monitor levels and price trends of the most important goods and services on the market of the country. The main task of Price Statistics is to monitor price trends over time, so the methods used in collecting and processing data are adapted to this task.

Price indices are one of the most important short-term indicators. They present the basis for making important decisions on economic and monetary policy. In addition, they are used for checking and adjusting the value of the business and private contracts, the adjustment of salaries, pensions, social allowances, as a deflator in National Accounts and in retail turnover and others.

The system of the Price Statistics includes:
- Price indices of the producers' products of agriculture and fishing
- Price indices of the producers' industrial products (for domestic and non domestic market)
- Retail prices indices (Retail Prices Index, Consumer Price Index and Consumer Price Index by COICOP)

Retail price indices are the most commonly used measure of inflation. Until January 2009 of Retail Price Index was used as measure of the inflation rate in Serbia, and now for the same purposes the Consumer Price Index by COICOP is being used.

Since January 2011 only Consumer Price Index by COICOP is published.
