1996-1997 Joint Nutrient Study (Jonus) II Plankton Data

The Jonus II programme was run to examine impacts of nutrients on the coastal pelagic community and consisted of a series of 7 individual cruises using Research Vessel Cirolana and the charter vessel 'Lough Voyager'.The survey was conducted in the southern North Sea, the Thames Estuary, The Wash, the Irish and Celtic Sea, the South-Western Approaches and the western English Channel.Aims of the Cirolana cruises :-1) To undertake process measurements at sites in the Thames estuary and southern North Sea to determine the impact of land derived nutrients on the marine ecosystem (AE0529A0 and C926J168).2) To undertake spatial surveys to determine the distribution of nutrients, phytoplankton indicators and other relevant parameters using CTD and underway sampling in the outer Thames estuary (AE0529A0 and C926J168).3) To undertake process measurements in sites at Dundalk Bay, the Western 'Gyre' region and in Liverpool Bay in the Irish Sea (AE0529A0 and C926J168).4) To undertake spatial surverys to determine the distribution of nutrients, phytoplankton indicators and other relevant parameters using CTD and underway sampling in the Irish Sea (AE0529A0 and C926J168).Aims of the Lough Voyager cruises :-1) To study microplankton community production and loss at three 'process' stations in the Irish Sea (Dundalk Bay, Liverpool Bay and the summer stratified region).2) To undertake a limited survey of the distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the vicinity of the three 'process' stations.3) To undertake trials with a multiplankton sampler. 4) To examine temporal changes in particulate organic carbon and zooplankton faecal pellet carbon over 24 hours at station 45 in the central stratified region.5) Collect samples of phytoplankton and zooplankton for species identification and enumeration.
