2011-2012 Mnemiopsis Ecology Modelling and Observation (MEMO) Plankton Data

This MEMO (Mnemiopsis Ecology Modelling and Observation) Project is part of a wider sampling programme in collaboration with Ifremer (France), ILVO (Belgium) and Deltares (Netherlands). The data collected will be used in producing models (Individual Biological Model [IBM], hydrodynamic, ecosystem and socioeconomic) that will help in the understanding of the life cycle ofMnemiopsis leidyi, the interactions of gelatinous zooplankton within their ecosystem and the consequences of increasing number of gelatinous zooplankton in European shelf seas for stakeholders (industry such as power plants, fisheries and tourism). Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (CEFAS ) will be involved with two surveys a year for the duration of this project.The project aims to collect samples for analysis of fish larvae and fish eggs, microzooplankton and mesozooplankton and phytoplankton.Cruise CEnd 5/11- Western English Channel (ICES area VIIE)Collect 30 vertical lift net samples for the MEMO project.Cruise CEnd 5/12 - Western English Channel (ICES area VIIE)Collect plankton samples for MEMO project.Cruise CEnd 7/12 - North Sea (Botney Gut/Silver Pit)a) Collect water samples for analysis of phytoplankton communities.b) Calibration of the Turner Phytoflash instrument on the Ferrybox system of Endeavour. Water samples will be collected and used to compare variable fluorescence measurements from the Phytoflash system installed permanently in the Ferrybox against independent results from a Chelsea Instruments Fastracka-II.Cruise CEnd 7X/12 - North Seaa) Service SmartBuoys at Warp and West Gabbard (SLA25G - 1day) and at Dowsing (SLA42A - 1day)b) Collect samples of water and plankton for analysis.
