Notes | The INtegrated Mapping FOr the Sustainable Development of Ireland's MArine Resource (INFOMAR) programme is a joint venture between the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) and the Marine Institute (MI). The programme is the successor to the Irish National Seabed Survey (INSS) and concentrates on creating integrated mapping products related to the seabed. Magnetism is the force of attraction or repulsion between substances. Many rocks have a magnetic component, caused by the presence of magnetic minerals within the rocks themselves, and this magnetic field can be measured by the magnetometer tow-fish. The magnetic data collection measures variations in the Earths magnetic field and is used for locating magnetic anomalies and helps in the identification of shipwrecks containing metal cargo and or vessels made from metal. In addition, it is also used for identification of iron rich rock bodies.
