Title | Groundwater Bodies
|
Notes | Groundwater Bodies (GWBs) are the groundwater management units within the Water Framework Directive (WFD). GWBs were delineated on the basis of groundwater flow regime and major hydrological boundaries in most cases, with the assumption that groundwater flow between GWBs is negligible and/or has very different flow and transport characteristics. The four aquifer types are: karst, productive fissured, poorly productive, and sand & gravel. The hydrological boundaries are generally hydrometric area boundaries, although they may be from smaller order river bodies in some cases.
This dataset contains both Bedrock and Sand and Gravel GWBs. The bedrock GWBs are based on the generalised bedrock aquifer map. The Sand and Gravel GWBs are based on sand and gravel aquifers that were delineated nationally. Not every sand and gravel aquifer was described as a separate GWB as it may have been too small. In some cases gravel GWBs were grouped depending on catchment and morphology. Further GWBs were delineated within the original GWBs to separate areas where special consideration should be given to the management of the groundwater body (e.g. where there are Less Stringent Objectives, as in urban areas; where major dewatering has already occurred, etc.). |
