Title | Burrishoole Salmonid Rearing and Ranching
|
Notes | The site in Newport has a history of rearing and ranching salmon and trout. Commercial rearing of salmon smolts took place from the early 1980s until 2008 and sporadic rearing of other stocks (ie. rainbow trout, char) has been carried out over the years. Salmon ranching commenced in the early 1960s and currently provides an independent assessment of marine survival and exploitation and supports key fishery research programmes. Fish husbandry data collected includes: Stock numbers, batch weights, grading details, broodstock: numbers, stripping dates, fecundity, and fish health information. Additional data collected within the salmon ranching programme includes: Salmonid ova details, micro-tagging details, salmon smolt details and adult recoveries.
The Marine Institute has a comprehensive freshwater salmonid fish rearing facility comprising a broodstock holding area, freshwater hatcheries for egg incubation and hatching, and indoor and outdoor rearing tanks for growing. The facility supports a range of aquaculture and wild salmonid research programmes. |
